Sandstone
Born from a mixture of water and sand grains, sandstone is a soft, malleable material that can be found in a variety of locations throughout the world. Sandstone is slowly formed over many years as water from oceans and rivers carry rocks and dirt to be buried under layers of sand. As each layer forms, the mixture solidifies to produce sandstone in its final form. Sandstone comes in a range of colors, ranging from pale yellows and piercing whites to deep red hues. Though sandstone is naturally soft, it can be cemented by silica to give it a hardness suitable for rugged construction and outdoor uses. In fact, sandstone is commonly used as an aggregate for concrete and asphalt work.
For home and business, sandstone offers a variety of possibilities. Sandstone can be easily manipulated for indoor use, building structures such as fireplaces, walls, countertops, and walkways. When used outside, sandstone is commonly found as facing stone, paving stone, or patio stone.
